Educators Guide To Safe And Engaging Video Conferencing

SAFETY TIPS

Safer use of Zoom
  • Teachers should create a new zoom meeting every class, so this means not using your personal ID for the class

  • Set up a waiting room for your students to join, allowing the host to see who is wanting to join

  • Do not publicize your zoom meeting on social media

Have open and safe conversations with students about online safety precautions
  • Educate students about ways to ensure online safety.

  • Notify parents to discuss with their children what constitutes ‘personal information’ to inhibit problematic disclosures during synchronous class

TIPS FOR IMPROVING ENGAGEMENT

Synchronous
  • Take an intermittent break in the middle of the lesson for students to refresh and revive

  • In Zoom, tell students to utilize the ‘raise hand’ function. This keeps the flow of the lecture intact, while also silently notifying you of a student’s comment or question..

  • Break-out rooms are a great way to get students to engage in smaller groups to discuss a particular question or carry out a task.

Asynchronous
  • Offer subtitles, or notes

  • Post slides of your PowerPoint after recording it live. This offers a chance for students to review the content at their own pace.

Limit distractions
  • Maintain a controlled environment, preferably an enclosed room to limit sounds and visible distractions

  • Consider placing a background in Zoom if your current background is distracting

  • Keep students muted during the presentation during synchronous recordings

Common video recording platforms
  • Zoom

  • Panopto

  • Microsoft Teams

  • Google Hangouts Meet
