DEIA Statement

At Department of Sound, we believe creativity and self-expression should be accessible to everyone, no matter their background or circumstances. From day one, we’ve been dedicated to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for underserved youth to tell their stories through music and podcasting.

Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility is central to everything we do. We strive to build a team that reflects the vibrant cultural diversity of Sacramento, ensuring our staff, teaching artists, and board members bring a range of voices and lived experiences to the table. This shows up in how we hire, who we partner with, and how we design our programs—always with input from the youth and communities we serve.

We work hard to create safe, welcoming spaces where every participant feels valued and supported. By offering all of our programs free of charge and addressing barriers like transportation and accessibility, we make sure no one is left out. Our curriculum is built to center cultural identity, celebrate diverse perspectives, and give students the tools they need to thrive emotionally and creatively.

We know this work is ongoing, and we’re committed to growing and learning along the way. That’s why we provide DEIA training for our staff and board and listen carefully to feedback from participants, families, and partners. These efforts help us stay accountable and ensure we’re meeting the needs of the communities we care about.

At Department of Sound, we’re not just here to teach music and podcasting—we’re here to build a more inclusive, equitable future where every voice matters.
